چکیده
The Institute of Medical Research has been the national centre for phage typing of Salmonella typhi since 1970. The antibiotic susceptibility pattern of all the isolates are also monitored simultaneously. The first case of chloramphenicol resistant S. typhi was isolated in 1978 and since then, these strains have occurred sporadically. For the years 1986 to 1990, all the strains sent for phage typing were sensitive to chloramphenicol. Then in 1991, between March to July, there was an outbreak of 18 cases of chloramphenicol resistant S. typhi in Selangor Darnl Ehsan. Although investigations carried out did not find a common source responsible for the outbreak, one of the cases was a visitor who came from southern India, whose isolate was of the same phage type and antibiogram pattern t.

Typhoidal Salmonella and Emerging Resistance in Outbreak Proportions
Introduction: Typhoidal Salmonella causes an invasive infection resulting in 200 000 deaths among 20 million patients annually. Typhoid remains a public health problem in Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and South America. Traveler’s diarrhea caused by Salmonella is common in Asia. Outbreaks of typhoidal Salmonella resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and t...

We report the emergence in Kenya during 1997-1999 of typhoid fever due to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and cotrimoxazole. Genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of XbaI-digested chromosomal DNA yielded a single cluster. The multidrug-resistant S. Typhi were related to earlier drug- susceptible isolates but were u...
متن کاملSalmonella typhi resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and other antimicrobial agents: strains isolated during an extensive typhoid fever epidemic in Mexico.
During 1972 a large epidemic, in excess of 10,000 cases, of typhoid fever occurred in Mexico City, Pachuca, and other communities of Mexico. The main characteristic of the epidemic, in addition to the large number of persons affected, was the prevalence of a strain of Salmonella typhi which was highly resistant to chloramphenicol both in vivo and in vitro, and which belonged to a single phage t...
متن کاملAntibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhi and Paratyphi a from North India: the Changing Scenario
Enteric fever prevails as a major public health problem despite the use of antimicrobials due to the emergence of drug resistance. The present study was undertaken to find out the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Salmonella isolates from our region. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing for six drugs chloramphenicol (30μg), amoxicillin (10μg), cotrimoxazole (1.25/23.75μg), nalidixic acid ...
متن کاملEpidemiology of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in Kathmandu: two years study and trends of antimicrobial resistance.
Enteric fever is prevalent in developing countries including Nepal, where it still remains as a major health problem. Appropriate antibiotics are essential for the treatment of typhoid and paratyphoid fever. A prospective study was carried out to characterize the epidemiological features of enteric fever in Kathmandu, Nepal and to analyse the recent trend of antimicrobial resistance pattern of ...
